List of Books & Journals of interest to Notophiles

For those of us whose native language is English, the list of sources for information on our favourite plants is quite sparse. So it is a good excuse to start to learn a new language. I have given a short help file on translating from German to English which may get you started.

This list is by no means meant to be a definitive list of Notocactus literature, I have only listed either Books, Field number lists or Journals that I have myself, or those that I have reliable information on. If you see any glaring omissions or mistakes then please Let Me Know.

The best source I have found of new or Second-hand books is Whitestone Gardens Ltd. They will also arrange subscriptions to some of the journals listed.

Books

Notocactus - A review of the Genus incorporating Brasilicactus, Eriocactus and Wigginsia by Tony Mace.
English. 1980 (Third edition).
The only English language Notocactus specific book available. General information and descriptions of most Notocacti known at that time. There are many line drawings and black and white photos. Sadly only available Second-hand. (Try to get hold of the Third edition or make sure you get the supplements that contain further updates.)
Rod Notocactus by Stanislav Stuchlík.
Czech with Latin descriptions. 1993.
This is the one of most comprehensive books I have. It contains general information, up to date descriptions of most Notocacti and detailed discussions of all of the plants listed, very good list of field numbers and many colour and black and white photos.
Notokakteen by Norbert Gerloff, Jozka Neduchal & Stanislav Stuchlík.
German. 1995.
This is an expanded and redesigned version of the above. Contains maps, diagrams, black and white photos of all species listed, many colour photos, full descriptions and notes on all species and updated and additional field number lists.
Note: The second printing has just been published, apparently only 200 copies, so grab your copy while you can. Copies were available from Whitestone gardens (England) and Jörg Köpper (Germany).
Die Gattung Notocactus by Gerhardt Schäfer.
German. 1979.
This is the 1979 year book of Kakteen/Sukkulenten. It contains detailed information and descriptions of most Notocacti know at that time. There are many colour and black and white photos. Only available Second-hand.
Kakteen in Südamerika -- Band 1 by Friedrich Ritter.
German. 1979.
This is a source of descriptions and observations of the Notocactus species that were discovered by Ritter in Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. There are many colour and black and white photos.
Kakteenlexikon by Curt Backeberg.
German. 1966.
This is a source of descriptions of most of the Notocactus species known at that time.
Cactus Lexicon by Curt Backeberg.
English. 1977.
English translation, by Lois Glass, of above. I find it very interesting to read Backeberg's comments on the various Genera etc.
Die Cactaceae -- Band 3 by Curt Backeberg.
German. 1959.
Descriptions and commentary on many Notocactus species. Contains many black and white photographs. An important source.
Lovec Kaktusu by Karel Crkal.

Druhové názvy rodu Notocactus v sirsim pojecti (vcetne synonym) by A. Janousek.

Journals

Internoto
German. 1980 - Present
This is, in my opinion, the best source of information on all aspects of Notophilia. Published four times a year (about 140 pages). There are occasionally English summaries of articles. It contains everything from first descriptions of new plants to plant and seed lists. The quality of the writing and illustrations is exceptional.

Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten DKG - The German Cacti Society - West Germany
German. 1949 - Present
This is also a very high quality publication. Published twelve times a year. It often contains first descriptions of new plants and other articles on various subjects regarding Notocactus.
Kaktusy
Czech. 1965 - Present
This is another very high quality publication. Originally published six times a year, but starting in 1994 reduced to 4 issues per year. First descriptions of new plants are now uncommen, but does contain other articles on various subjects regarding Notocactus.

Kakteen/Sukkulenten The periodical of the GDR - East Germany
German Democratic Republic since 1966
This was also a very high quality publication. Published four times a year.
Chileans
English. 1966 - Present
This is a publication dedicated to South American cacti and tends to have a thematic subject each issue. The style of the journal is informal and very down to earth, but very detailed at the same time. Subjects range from discussion of specific plants to travelogues. Often contains translations of foreign language articles.
The Chileans also offer an excellent field number list, which contains virtually all of the field collectors active in South America and they also produce a booklet of all the maps that have been used in the past publications.

British Cactus & Succulent Journal
English. 1983 - Present
This is published four times a year (about 170 pages) and contains a good balance of articles, with the occasional Notocactus specific article. Including, for the past couple of years, a number of articles by Norbert Gerloff and René Zahra. It has recently had a style overhaul, so is well worth a look.

The Cactus & Succulent Journal
American. 1929 - Present
This is published six times a year and contains the occasional Notocactus specific article. It tends to have a leaning towards North American cacti.

Succulenta
Dutch.
This is published six times a year and contains the occasional Notocactus specific article. I don't have any personal experience of this journal.
