Plants to 10 cm Ø, flat globose, later somewhat elongated; ribs 7-12 (-15), mostly straight, blunt, quite wide and now and then humped; areoles to 10 mm apart. Radial spines to 20, laterally radiating, needle like, straight, yellowish; central spines 3-4, stronger and larger, brownish to red. Receptacle funnel shaped, Stamens in two groups, sensitive; plants self fertile.

Plants very variable, mostly flat globose, later becoming elongated, to 8 cm Ø, lush green to bluish green, but also light yellow-green; apex slightly sunken. Ribs 12-15, only indistinct humps, narrow to somewhat sharp edged; Radial spines 15-18, quite short, laterally spreading, brownish, whitish or horn coloured; Central spines about 4, in the apex blackish to brown red. Flower with short, cup to bell shaped receptacle, small to at most medium sized, bud almost bare; petals short, brownish orange yellow to yolk yellow; stigma mostly yellow or very pale reddish; stamens in 2 groups, mostly not sensitive; fertility conditions still not clear.

Plants medium sized, globose, to 10 cm Ø, dark blue green; clearly distinguished in appearance from the species of Series 1 and 2. Ribs 8-10, sharp edged, deep, straight; Spines strong, often somewhat curved to the body, radiating, always black to dark brown; Radial spine 6-10, Central spines 1-4, often inconspicuous. Flower long funnel shaped, in one case almost cup shaped, large, lemon yellow; stamens in two groups, not sensitive; stigma red; fertility conditions still not clear.
