Photographs of Turbinicarpus species belonging to the Macrochele aggregate

The vast majority of the plants pictured here were acquired from the specialist Turbinicarpus nursery of Paolino Panarotto. If you are interested in the genus Turbinicarpus, including Gymnocactus, I cannot praise the service and quality of plants of this nursery highly enough. There are also a few interesting forms, which are not found anywhere else, originating from another excellent source of plants and literature, Whitestone Gardens.

If you are interested in knowing where a particular plant originated from then feel free to email me.

[T. macrochele : (500 x 375)] T. macrochele
This plant is approximately 3cm Ø x 2cm high. If you look carefully near the base of the bud, you should just be able to make out a split fruit with seeds.

[T. macrochele (El Fraile, Dr. Arroyo) : (500 x 402)] T. macrochele (El Fraile, Dr. Arroyo)
This plant is approximately 2cm Ø x 1cm high. This particular plant seems to want to grow submerged no matter how I pot it.

This taxa is supposedly a form of T. macrochele ssp. frailensis coming from Dr. Arroyo, NL. From the appearance of the flowers (particularly the stigma) in the following pictures, this is really only a form of the type species.

[Flower of T. macrochele 'Buena Vista' : (500 x 436)] Flower of T. macrochele 'Buena Vista'
The flower is approximately 2cm Ø. Buena Vista is a locality in SLP about half way between the type localities of T. macrochele and macrochele var. polaskii and this taxa is believed to be a transitional form between them.

[T. macrochele var. polaskii : (500 x 358)] T. macrochele var. polaskii
This plant is approximately 5cm Ø x 3cm high. In the past this species has been confused with T. schmiedickeanus ssp. klinkerianus fa. schwarzii. If your schwarzii looks like a big, brownish, bloated, blob, instead of a velvet skinned plant with angular tubercles, you need a new label !!
