A few notes about cactus descriptions

  1. For a description to be valid in the eyes of the ICBN there must also be a Latin version of the description. In some cases the Latin is the only language given. These are usually the older descriptions or ones where there are only minor differences to the type. When this Latin description is missing the description, and therefore the name, is invalid.
  2. The amount of detail included in a description is generally related to its age, with the more recent descriptions being the most detailed. In fact many of the older description are completely lacking details of fruits and seeds.
  3. The dimensions of these plants in cultivation will almost certainly differ from those listed in the description. You will generally find the plant bodies will be larger and may offset more frequently.
  4. As there are many "locality forms" of most Turbinicarpus species do not expect the description of the type to fit exactly.
  5. In habitat most of these plants only protrude a few millimeters above the ground.
  6. In many of the descriptions there are references to the spines dropping, in cultivated plants this only happens if the plants are treated roughly or when the tubercles shrivel at the base of the plant.
