Select the name of a plant to view the description in English together with
notes and a photograph. The Latin descriptions are found with the original
description. The availability of additional translations and other additional
descriptions, including those on other sites, are also listed. However, to save
space, notes and lists of related taxa are only included in the English pages.

- For a description to be valid in the eyes of the
ICBN
there must also be a Latin
version of the description. In some cases the Latin is the only language given.
These are usually the older descriptions or ones where there are only minor
differences to the type. When this Latin description is missing the description,
and therefore the name, is invalid.
- The amount of detail included in a description is generally related to its
age, with the more recent descriptions being the most detailed. In fact many of
the older description are completely lacking details of fruits and seeds.
- The dimensions of these plants in cultivation will almost certainly differ
from those listed in the description. You will generally find the plant bodies
will be larger and may offset more frequently.
- As there are many "locality forms" of most Turbinicarpus species do
not expect the description of the type to fit exactly.
- In habitat most of these plants only protrude a few millimeters above the
ground.
- In many of the descriptions there are references to the spines dropping,
in cultivated plants this only happens if the plants are treated roughly or
when the tubercles shrivel at the base of the plant.
