Description of T. saueri ssp. septentrionalis

Stem cylindrical to elongated when young, with prominent, slightly narrowing, underground part, later flat globose or discoid, up to 8 cm wide - with high tissue density (weight). Areoles circular to slightly elongated, 3-5 x 2 mm; epidermis dark green, glaucous, tubercles very dense, 4 mm wide and 7 mm high, conical, spirally arranged into 8, 13 or 21 ribs. Root round at the young stage, later branched

Spines arranged into lateral and central, most adult plants have central spines, lateral spines radiate, white to hyaline, 4-6 mm long, 20-31; one central spine comes from the upper part of the areole, tawny when young, greyish brown to greyish black later, 10-20 mm long, about 0.3 mm thick.

Flower 27-33 mm wide, 30 mm high, nearly funnel shaped, inner tepals in 2-3 circles, broadly lanceolate, acute, white with prominent violet mid-stripe.

Fruit: dried berry. Seeds small, black.

Type locality: a valley north of Monterrey on the way to Bustamante.

Holotypus: G.S. Hinton No. 28256 collected by Hinton on 28th May 2004.
